Features of Straight Edge Sealing and Curved Edge Sealing

Based on the edge shape characteristics of the processed parts, edge banding for panel furniture can be divided into straight edge banding and curved edge banding. With the increasing popularity of panel furniture, while maintaining direct edge banding production, it is necessary to add some curved components to beautify the product's shape and enhance the overall value of the workpiece. However, curved edge banding is slower, limiting production speed while enhancing aesthetics.

Currently, edge banding for panel furniture is mostly done on edge banding machines. The selection and configuration of the edge banding machine mainly depends on the shape characteristics of the workpiece to be processed, the type of edge banding material, and also on factors such as productivity and quality. Edge banding machines can be classified according to their level of automation as manual, semi-automatic, and fully automatic. Straight edge banding can use ordinary straight edge banding machines, as well as soft-forming edge banding machines, post-forming edge banding machines, and double-end edge banding machines. Relatively speaking, curved edge banding is more complex and can be performed using manual edge banding machines, machining centers, and semi-automatic or fully automatic CNC edge banding machines. Straight edge banding is commonly used on simple-shaped products such as office furniture and cabinets. When configuring the machine, the main considerations are production volume and the addition or subtraction of certain functions. For example, a scraper device is needed for edge banding materials such as PVC or ABS; for solid wood edge banding strips, a fine-finishing knife and sanding device are required. To ensure that the edge banding quality is not affected by low winter temperatures, it is best to choose an edge banding machine equipped with a far-infrared preheating device.

Curved edge banding can be processed using several methods. Currently, most manufacturers use manual edge banding machines to process curved parts, especially board parts with inner curves. The diameter of the edge banding machine's guide rollers determines the maximum curve depth that can be processed. Using manual edge banding machines for curved edges is simple to operate and requires fewer steps. However, due to the manual edge banding method, the quality is relatively low, mainly manifested in lower bonding strength, poor repeatability, and a higher rework rate. Furthermore, manual edge banding machines are relatively difficult to use for commonly used thick edge banding strips (1.0-3.0mm), while thin edge banding strips (0.4-1.0mm) used on some invisible parts can be processed in both straight and curved directions.

The above analysis shows that straight edge banding and curved edge banding technologies are different, and the edge banding equipment used is also different. Therefore, it is recommended that manufacturers pay attention to product output and adaptability to market demand when purchasing and using edge banding machines, and thus select equipment with different levels of automation and combine them accordingly.
